FM 3 ("Buddha Boxing" / Konzert/Performance)
Buddha Boxing is a sound art "game" devised by FM3 for live performance with the Buddha Machine (see below!). The performance resembles a game of cards, where two people pick up and put down different combinations of "cards" but instead of cards, the medium is a Buddha Machine and the purpose is to create a unique soundscape that changes every time the game is played. Normally for a typical Buddha Boxing performance, FM3 will play for 30-35 minutes. Then after the game, Christiaan Virant from FM3 will give a short introduction to the audience about how to play the game, and then let the audience play.

Zum Schlussakt der Reihe "absence/presence polonaise" (und aller Voraussicht nach auch des parismoskau als "Venue") spielen zur Finissage von Kata Adameks Installation "Shelters" das chinesische Avantgarde Elektronik Projekt "FM3". FM3 wurde 1999 in Peking gegruendet und FM3 sind der "Elektronik Pionier in China" Christiaan Virant und der Keyboarder und Computermusiker Zhang Jian. Der FM3 sound wird destilliert aus traditionellen chinesischen Instrumenten den von FM3 entwickelten Buddha Machines:
"Ob an das Klagelied eines aussortierten Rechners erinnernd oder einschmeichelnde minimale Kompositionen - das Experimentalmusik-Duo fm3 aus China, Christiaan Virant und Zhang Jian, bietet mit dem Geraet flirrende Atmosphaere fuer fiebrig Arbeitende und Tapeten fuer ausufernde Gedanken" (taz)
Die Buddha Machines sind Loop Player, bestueckt mit den FM3 Loops, die man sich auch auf fm3buddhamachine.com herunteladen kann und so auch ohne die Buddha Machine abspielen kann. Aber die Maschine besticht durch ihre Einfachheit und eben die fantastischen Loops. Irgendwo steht:
"The Buddha Machine is a small soundbox made in China which comes with an integrated speaker, a volume control, mini jack-out and a switch to choose between nine different loops which are stored on a small chip and can be directly played by this mini soundsystem... a unique 'soundbox' from China, which is causing senstation worldwide. A totally dazzling item which causes jaw-dropping delight everywhere -- Alan Bishop bought twenty-four of these on sight, Brian Eno bought eight. The Buddha Machine is a hardware loop player, built kind of like a little AM radio (available in 6 different colors, shipped randomly), but without all the nonsense -- total genius from out of nowhere".
Zur Buddha Machine und zu einem beim Berliner Staubgold Label veroeffentlichten Sampler "Jukebox Buddha" erschienen zahlreiche Rezensionen: vom chinesischen Rolling Stone ueber The Wire und Taz bis zur New York Times (siehe www.fm3buddhamachine.com). Der Sampler ist inspiriert von den Sounds der Buddha Machine, artists wie sunn0))), Blixa Bargeld, Gudrun Gut, Adrian Sherwood you name it arbeiten mit ihnen oder steuern Tracks als Tribute zur Buddha Machine bei.
Die Sounds von FM3 und Staubgold Label Chef Markus Detmer mit seinen eklektischen DJ-Sets bilden mehr als nur den passenden Rahmen zu Kata Adameks zurueckhaltenden, minimalistisch-grossen, weissen zeltartigen Installationsobjekt.
